BACKGROUND

The purpose of the Shirley Price International College for Aromatherapy is to train the leading professional aromatherapists of the future in the science and principles underlying aromatherapy as well as effective practical massage technique which relies on an understanding of human physiology and so can be effective even without essential oils. We also aim to broaden the knowledge of those within Aromatherapy and educate and inform all practising health and beauty and veterinary professionals who are interested and committed to integrated healthcare and individual well-being. Our college events and conferences attract leading international practitioners to speak. Our college takes students to see our growers and see the distillation process at first hand.

Massage of essential oils into the skin remain the safest and most effective way of employing essential oils for therapeutic benefit to the skin and the whole body, mind and spirit. Indeed many effective treatments to maintain muscular and joint effectiveness in athletes human and equine cannot be given any other way.

As the profession moves towards increased acceptance a measure of regulation is inevitable and has been a feature of professional aromatherapy from the outset. New standards in education and CPD will make it possible to become more effective and knowledgeable in our fascinating vocation. Of course there must be ethical standards to maintain the standing of the profession and support for those professionals who need it.

The fact of spiritual healing is not disputed. The fact of the healing quality of forgiveness and the benefit in avoiding of the destructive emotions of anger, jealousy and grief is not only self evident it is the foundation stone on which rests all religion and so all law and so all justice. The task of aromatherapy in helping clients create and maintain radiant health and beauty is a complex one. It is not the treatment of a departure from an ideal it is an ideal in itself which can be attained by anyone in greater or lesser degree.

Aromatherapy is recognised as a key holistic approach to personal care and beauty. Aromatherapy is and meant to pleasurable and restorative in the home and at work. It is a pleasure to work with therapeutic purely natural products to help maintain radiant good health and beauty in ourselves, our families and others.

Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, principally essential oils, for maintaining mental and physical well-being and radiant beauty. It is combined with massage which is the most effective means of administering essential oils to the body. Essential oils of high quality which are the pure "essence" of a plant concentrated through a process of distillation, have been found to provide both psychological and physical benefits when used correctly and safely by a trained aromatherapist.

For aroma therapeutic purposes the wholeness of the oil is indispensable. Oil used for its flavour and fragrance may be adjusted and lose its therapeutic benefit. Essential oil for therapeutic use should not be adulterated, 'ennobled', not re-distilled (as sadly many are) not fractionated, no parts removed or added. They are distilled specifically for aromatherapy from known plant material. We work closely with growers to ensure our oils meet this standard. Our oil is therefore naturally more expensive than oils to be found on the high street which tend to be high volume low quality commercial perfume grade oil produced to a price and volume.

Prevention is better than cure when it comes to wellness. Researchers in human health problems highlight actions that people can take individually to maintain personal health and effectiveness. Primary among these are maintaining a nutritious and balanced diet with a low fat content, getting sufficient sleep and regular exercise. Aromatherapists can assist in sustaining a healthy lifestyle as well as in the treatment of specific health conditions. Besides its place as a beauty treatment in the leading beauty salons aromatherapy is increasingly taking its place among more established treatments particularly in the short term relief of stress in the NHS.

There has long been a tradition of a scientific approach in France where in particular the anti bacterial and anti viral properties of essentials oils have long been demonstrated. There is also a tradition in French and Chinese medicine of taking essential oils and herbal products internally which can be hazardous even in trained medical hands because of the uneven quality of the products sometimes administered. There is no doubt however that their external use in trained hands is safe and therapeutic. An individual allergic reaction to the oils can quickly be detected by applying a small quantity to the elbow.

There is no doubt however that this is the direction which suppliers of essential oils must go providing oils in confectionery or capsule form for medical use. More research is needed and grant money for research is increasingly available.

A French chemist called Rene Maurice Gattefosse coined the term aromatherapy to describe the process of using plant oils therapeutically. The story goes that, while working in a perfume factory in the early 20th century, he burnt his hand and instinctively plunged his hand into a container of lavender oil. He was so impressed by how quickly and cleanly the burn healed, he began studying the healing powers of plant oils. Gattefosse is credited with coining the term aromatherapy. In 1937, Gattefosse wrote a book called Aromatherapie that was later translated into English and named Gattefosse's Aromatherapy. It is still in print and widely read and the foundation of all modern literature.

The modern literature is worldwide and aromatherapy now attracts much scientific study particularly in behaviourism as a practical technique for assisting children with learning disorders.Aromatherapy is now widely practised as part of complimentary medicine. The anxiety-reducing properties of aromatherapy in the short-term have been recognised by the NHS, and aromatherapy is increasingly used, particularly by nurses in hospices and nursing homes. Many health clubs, sports centres, beauty clinics, complementary therapy centres and health spas now offer aromatherapy massage. It may also be possible to find a private practitioner who will come to your home.

The Consortium can supply a list of its association members and training establishments, along with more information about aromatherapy. Only courses that involve at least 180 hours of training are included on the list. Q. What is the history of Aromatherapy? A. Plants and their essential oils have been used since records began and before. Neanderthal man has been found buried with 9 medicinal plants including yarrow. I like to think of neanderthal man using rose water (easily obtained by adding rose petals to the cooking pot) to flavour his meals. Herodotus records how Egyptian mummifiers filled the body with every aroma herb and essential oil they could get their hands on as a preservative. Many medicines have been derived from plants or use synthesised active components found in plants. Essential oils are mentioned in the Bible particularly frankincense and myrrh. Around 1550 there was an aroma boom and the essential oils recorded and used in pharmacies increased from 3 to 61. Some essential oils were used for their antiseptic qualities in the the first and second world wars particularly in dealing with gangrene. A French Chemist Rene Gattefosse coined the term aromatherapy around 1928. He revived interest in essential oils after accidentally discovering the healing qualities of essential oils after receiving a burn. Indeed they probably saved his life. In the 1960s his countryman Valnet, doctor, highlighted the need to expand knowledge of natural products and diet. His book remains in print and led a movement for Doctors to become trained aromatherapists which is today personified by Dr Daniel Penoel co-author of L'aromatherapie exactement. Valnets book set the format for subsequent books around the world. At the same time Marguerite Maury (married to a french acupuncturist and homeopath) picking up on the application of essential oils in massage introduced Aromatherapy Massage into the UK through beauty therapists. Three of Marguerite Maury's students in particular Shirley Price, Eve Taylor and Danielle Ryman (all still alive and working today) popularised and spread the treatment around the world.

Q: I have just heard of Shirley Price Aromatherapy -- how long have you been around? A: SP’s story starts in 1974, when therapist Shirley Price founded Shirley Price Aromatherapy Ltd in Hinckley England. A talented public speaker and trainer, with her husband Len a chemist, she became an international best selling author and co-founded the international trade bodies IFPA and the IFA as well as the Aromatherapy Trades Council and more.

The professionalism of the Shirley Price International College of Aromatherapy (SPICA pronounced Spaika) stood out in an industry when western medical acceptance of complimentary healthcare and aromatherapy was then in its infancy. People were aware that the chemotherapy on offer by mass western healthcare systems offered was getting miraculous results but at a price in terms of side effects and was not getting at the underlying cause of their ailment or satisfying the individual. Thats where complementary therapy came in (or I should say came back in - during the 1930s pharmacies offered products which were plant based rather than synthesised). Now its as big as synthetic chemotherapy again.

The SPICA college went on to found satellite training colleges around the world while skin care companies seeking to supply high quality essential oils added Shirley Price oils to their listings. The factory and training workforce grew to 30 employees. Shirley Price sold the college and business in 1998 and retired.

The new owners acquired the well regarded Lothian Herbs Aromatherapy a complimentary business with a strong export and retail brand and product range of quality conventional essential oils. The Essentia skincare range was developed into a full natural skincare range. The company's products appeared in Boots, Sainsburys and Tesco. The export business developed strongly with the addition of Chun Hun and Jong Dong Cosmetics as Distributors in Asia in 2002.

Shirley Price Professional Aromatherapy continued to stock the finest essential oils for therapeutic use.

Today in 2009 Sp continues to be export led with sales to over 40 countries accounting for over 80% of sales. The core clientelle of Shirley Price Professional Aromatherapy continue to be some 1300 practising aromatherapists many of who trained with the company and who return to the college as tutors and for CPD.

The company supports the bi-annual IFPA conferences with a trade stand. The oils come from the worlds leading essential oils agents with some oils sourced by myself directly on my travels around the world to visit customers and suppliers.

We maintain the training college and CPD with the latest developments. In 2009 CPD includes "How to succeed as a therapist" and the 'M' technique which has taken America by storm.

The handmade Essentia skincare range continues to be in demand with its plain white packaging.

Lothian Herbs Aromatherapy continues to supply conventional oils so we cater for all budgets and uses.

The export trade continues to be important however I am pleased to say our core business in the UK remains robust even in these testing times of recession with the company maintaining good oil stocks.

The SPICA college principal and training manager is Louise Carta. The Director, Training is Dr Manjit Singh Jaspal MB BS. Besides training for the Diploma in Aromatherapy SPICA also continues to serve as the research sponsoring arm of Shirley Price Aromatherapy Ltd, and is a critical component of our product development, product knowledge and education curriculum for distributors.

Belinda Marsh training manager before Louise developed product training materials for Boots the Chemists employees which still form the basis of our long weekend induction course for home use, distributors and stockists.

A DVD by Victoria Sprigg illustrates the use of the company's products.
